HILCO'S ANDY DAHLMAN QUOTED IN "SECURED LENDER"

The Secured Lender Editor:  "What was the biggest challenge for you or your company in 2009 and how did you overcome it?"
 
Andy Dahlman, SVP, M&E Valuation Group, Hilco Appraisal Services:  "Keeping current during 2009 on asset values across the broad spectrum of machinery and equipment categories presented a significant challenge to Hilco Appraisal Services. Many categories, particularly related to plastics and metal fabrication, especially for automotive, experienced precipitous drops in value in a relatively compressed time frame as more companies were forced to sell unproductive assets, effectively flooding the market. Concurrently, the number of buyers dwindled internationally, precipitating further drops in value. In some instances, we saw values drop by 50% to 75% within 12 to 18 months.
 
Fortunately, we were able to overcome the challenge because Hilco Appraisal regularly collaborates with Hilco Industrial, the M&E disposition arm of Hilco and a host of industry specialists covering all asset categories, to exchange M&E sales data. We were able to track values across many categories on a real-time basis, integrate the data with our own primary research, and provide our ABL clients with reliable M&E valuations to help them better manage risk."
